Foster Home Rules / Guidelines
  • No toys that they could ingest
  • No soft items to avoid ingestion when not supervised.
  • Provide the cat with water.
  • Do NOT leave the cat alone for long periods. It could cause anxiety and destruction.
  • Allow time for the cat to decompress. We may not know how long they’ve been loose or what kind of journey they were on.
  • Keep cats separate from your own pets - health unknown (I.e. vaccination status), fleas, ticks, may not get along or have resource guarding behaviour.
  • We are required to return the cat to the owner who provides proof of ownership.
  • **Discuss with Michelle Murray if concerned about neglect, etc. She will contact HS/SPCA/PAWS to inform them.
  • Check on the cat regularly.
  • Avoid having the cat sleep in bed with any members of your family or guests. Fleas, ticks, health issues.
  • Take precautions around doors, etc, to prevent the cat from getting loose from you.
  • Do your best to keep your foster cat calm to avoid over-excitement or anxiety.
  • Take pictures when you get a chance. Post them in the Journey Fosters Niagara group to increase the chances the cat will be recognized by its family.
  • Return Journey Fosters Niagara equipment when no longer fostering. Ie. microchip scanner, accessories, etc.

Fosters provide a temporary safe space until either an owner claims the cat or the Humane Society picks them up, usually within 24 hours. Our team will provide supplies and ongoing support.

To become a journey foster, you must have previous fostering experience, have had several cats over a lifetime, or work with animals in the pet industry. Remember that we will not have the behaviour history of the cats we take into our care, so experience is strongly advised and will be considered when reviewing applications.
